Pleasanton, California is a wealthy suburb of the Bay Area that is located 25 miles east of Oakland and has a current population of just over 70,285 people. In recent years Pleasanton has become known as number four on USA Today’s ‘America’s 50 Best Cities To Live In’ and it was also named the third wealthiest American city by NerdWallet in 2013.
Pleasanton didn’t become the name of the region until 1893, and prior to then the area was called Alisal, which became famous during the California Gold Rush in the mid-19th century. Although later on the city was named after Major General Alfred Pleasonton, the U.S. Postal Service’s typo established the current spelling.
Today, Pleasanton remains one of the most architecturally diverse cities in northern California with its historic downtown area containing many preserved buildings dating back to the mid-19th century. Pleasanton is also considered one of the richest cities in the entire country.
Pleasanton is a city almost entirely full of families with over 76% of all households in the city belonging to over 19,200 families in total. The average family size is 3.20 and has been growing in recent years.
Pleasanton is also a rather old city as compared to many of its neighbors, and the median age of the city is right at 40.5 years. Although this number may signify an overall old population, Pleasanton’s population is relatively evenly dispersed in terms of age.
Like previously mentioned, Pleasanton is considered one of the wealthiest cities in the United States, and that comes from its median household income being at $121,622, which is the highest for cities with populations in between 65,000 and 249,999 people, and is much higher than the California statewide median of $60,190.
The affluence in Pleasanton has lead to a very competitive real estate market, and the average price of a home’s value in the city is $927,200 as of September 2015.
Pleasanton’s education system has also been highly noted as compared to the rest of America, and the school district includes 11 Elementary schools, three Middle schools and four High schools.
Pleasanton predominately consists of white (67%), Native American (23.2%) and Latino (10.3%) residents and the population density is precisely 2,896.5 people per square mile.

Shopping is one of the more popular things to do in Pleasanton given that many of the city’s residents have the money to really shop, and one of the best places to go shopping in the city is the Stoneridge Shopping Center. It’s here that you’ll get access to some of the best and most popular designer brands on the market.
Like most of the area surrounding Pleasanton, wineries are extremely popular for all of the residents and tourists throughout the year. Although Pleasanton has several winery tour options, the Ruby Hill Winery is by far one of the best in the city. Other really great winery tour options in the city include the Rubin Estates Winery and the Mitchell Katz Winery.
Pleasanton offers a large variety of outdoor recreation opportunities, and scattered throughout the city are several different parks that offer fun in the sun for the whole family. Some of the most popular parks in the area include the Shadow Cliffs Regional Recreation Area, the Augustin Bernal Park and the Alviso Adobe Community Park. All of these parks offer incredible views of the city and the nature that surrounds this area of California, and they also provide incredible opportunities to learn more about California’s very in-depth natural history.
Some of the main local events that happen on a regular basis in Pleasanton include First Wednesday and Friday Concerts in the Park, which is at Lions’ Wayside Park off of First Street in downtown. Both of these events are free to attend and always draw a large crowd bringing the community together at least a couple times per week.
Food & Leisure
Pleasanton is known for its incredible restaurants, wineries and nightlife. Some of the best restaurants in the city include places like The Press, New Thai Bistro, Lokanta, Gan Restaurant and Nonni’s Bistro.
The late night scene is also fun all year round in Pleasanton, and some of the more popular bars in the area include McKay’s Taphouse and Beer Garden, Beer Baron Bar & Kitchen, Cellar Door, Main Street Brewery and 828 Bites and Brews. All of these bars offer great entertainment including live music, billiards, arcade games and incredible ambiences.
Pleasanton is a relatively bi-partisan city with both democratic and republican representatives in Washington, and the local government operates through a council-manager municipal government that includes four City Council members and a mayor who are all elected at-large in direct elections.
The local courthouse, the Gale-Schenone Hall of Justice, is located at 5672 Stoneridge Drive, and the City Hall is located at 123 Main Street.
